Northeast winters can be daunting. Especially for those who love the outdoors but feel trapped inside while snow falls and waterways freeze. But there’s something about being outdoors when most people aren’t. Getting to appreciate the sparkle of freshly fallen snow, waterfalls frozen midstream, the feeling of accomplishment when you let nothing stop you from connecting with the activity you love: outdoor adventure. We don’t think that a little cold should keep you indoors, and that’s why we’re thrilled Nancy Zane at North Star Adventures offers winter outdoor experiences for people of all skill levels.

With over 25 years of experience in adventure education, Nancy has taught skills classes including Backpacking, Winter Pursuits, Map and Compass, and many more. Now she is an official Maine Recreation and Sea Kayak Guide and the passionate founder of North Star. To Nancy, being in nature is about so much more than just an activity or place to go. It’s where you can learn, recharge and refocus on what’s important to you, and gain confidence to take with you everywhere. She developed North Star Adventures to give aspiring adventurers just that. Her winter experiences are designed to help people experience the beauty of winter, with the beginner at the top of her mind. Winter adventures can require extensive planning, knowledge, resources, gear – things that beginner to intermediate outdoor enthusiasts may not have. Through half-day to multi-day excursions, North Star bridges that gap to help people get out and bask in winter’s beauty.

North Star offers a variety of experiences including snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and even an Adventures in the Arts program for those who want to tap into their creative side. One upcoming winter adventure is the Northwoods Winter Weekend in Rockwood, Maine. Designed for beginners, this trip includes skiing on groomed trails, possibly hiking Mt. Kineo, and staying in a rustic cabin on Moosehead Lake. Winter Watercolor with Lesia Sochor includes beginner snowshoeing and painting a winter scene in Tanglewood Camp for all skill levels. From the seasoned skier to the beginner who has yet to put on a pair of snowshoes, North Star has an adventure for you. Be sure to keep an eye out for what’s in store for 2020. With plans to expand fall programs and introduce more advanced winter experiences, North Star’s sending exciting expeditions our way.

If you’re not looking to sign up for the pre-planned trips, Nancy also customizes individual and group adventures. The comfort and adventure levels are all up to you! From January through March, she invites you to step out of your comfort zone and embrace Maine’s winter. Of course, she’s happiest to see her fellow outdoor enthusiasts having an incredible time.
